There's a reason Ogunquit means "beautiful place by the sea."
This small yet gorgeous seaside village has a little something for every visitor: beautiful beaches, amazing restaurants, locally-made treasures, and outdoor adventures. Here's a roundup of some of our Ogunquit favorites:
The active beaches
White sand, cool sea breeze, laid-back vibes: the beaches on Ogunquit are renowned for their beauty. Open and accessible to all - including those who require wheelchairs - these Ogunquit beaches will make you never want to leave:
Footbridge Beach - Enjoy the views over the sparkling Ogunquit River as your traverse a long footbridge to get to this beach. Ideal for when your journeys take you to the northern part of town, this beach is popular with striper fishers. And if you're lucky, you might just glimpse the piping plover that lives here, an endangered bird species.
Main Beach - This beach is gloriously close to many lodgings in Ogunquit, so if you're staying in central Ogunquit you'll probably be able to wake up, get breakfast, then stroll to the beach. As the most popular beach, Main Beach features restrooms, showers, a lifeguard station that rents wheelchairs, beach equipment rentals, and a restaurant!
Riverside of Main Beach - If you want to enjoy slightly warmer waters or perhaps take the paddleboard out, the riverside of Main Beach might be for you. This makes it very popular with families.
The gay nightlife
After the sun sets, Ogunquit truly comes alive.
Mainestreet Ogunquit is a fun nightclub that features incredible events, including drag shows, karaoke, and even a trivia night! As north New England's largest gay nightclub, Mainestreet features three bars, two outdoor decks, and two dance rooms.
The Front Porch has been a staple in Ogunquit for 35 years and offers an incredible menu, delicious cocktails, and a chilled-out atmosphere. They're distinctive for their sing-along Piano Bar, which has a rotating schedule of incredible talent.
Locally owned and operated restaurants and retail
There are so many things that make Ogunquit special, including the fact that this little Maine town prioritizes locally owned and operated restaurants and retail. We love our local economy, and live to support artisans and restaurants. Here are some of our favorites:
Explore the Sea with Local Boat cruise and lighthouses
No trip to Ogunquit would be complete without a trip out on the water! Take a cruise out to visit the Nubble Lighthouse, which has been around since the late 1800s. You can also book breakfast cruises, cocktail cruises, and a hands-on lobstering cruise.
Explore the Land by Walking, Hiking, and Golfing
In addition to the incredible public beaches, Ogunquit has so much to offer out on the town. Stroll through the cute, quaint downtown areas, sipping coffee or tea and enjoying the serenity. Stop at those locally-owned-and-operated shops for some retail therapy, and take in the town. History buffs will want to check out the Romanesque Revival architecture of the Ogunquit Memorial Library, which is on the National Registry of Historical Places
Or head out on a mini adventure to some of Ogunquit's many parks. Dorothea Jacobs Grant Common is a great place for a lovely picnic, and you can take the pups to play in Ogunquit Dog Park. Are you an avid golfer? Ogunquit also has some of the best golf courses in Southern Maine.
And hiking, anyone? If you're interested in a trail experience, take the gorgeous Marginal Way paved path that leads you from Perkins Cove to the center of Ogunquit Village.
Events, Entertainment, and Weddings
There's always something to do (and someone saying "I do") in Ogunquit. Though there's too many to mention, some fun events are the Art & Antiquefest 2018, the ever-popular Ogunquit Fest, the shows at Ogunquit Playhouse, and of course the fun and recurring nightlife events at Mainstreet.
And finally, Ogunquit offers a serene yet fun location to hold a wedding. As part of our inclusive and open community, we celebrate love in all its forms. Ogunquit has gorgeous venues for weddings, ranging from Clay Hill Farm for a more rustic experience, to Village by the Sea and its beautiful ballroom.
